Chandigarh | Man booked, woman arrested for ‘trespass, stealing valuables’ from orphan’s house | Chandigarh News

POLICE HAVE booked a man and arrested a woman for alleged trespass, criminal intimidation and stealing valuables from the house of an orphan, whose parents died due to Covid-19, in Sector 42.

The arrested woman was identified as Manjeet Kaur, 46, of Ferozepur. She was remanded in judicial custody Monday. Police said that accused Shalinder Rai of Sector 45 is absconding. He is the cousin of the complainant, Rahul Rai, who has been staying with his maternal uncle in Ludhiana after the death of his parents since 2021.

Rahul Rai’s father Kulbhushan Rai was a retired chief engineer from PWD department of Punjab. His mother Dr Manjeet Rai was a retired colonel from the Indian Army. Rahul Rai is not physically fit. He did not attend school after Class 10.

“Suspect Shalinder Rai of Sector 45 prepared certain documents and sold the house to Manjeet Kaur, whose husband Rajwant Singh has been working with an engineering institute in Punjab. During the course of investigation, we found that Shalinder Rai had no authority to sell the house and the whole ownership was lying with victim Rahul Rai. Though Manjeet Kaur, who was arrested last Saturday, had claimed that she had paid around Rs 1 crore to Shalinder Rai, she failed to produce any valid documents. Shalinder had also moved a complaint against the complainant but the probe found the complaint frivolous. We lodged an FIR against Shalinder Rai and Manjeet Kaur on the basis of legal opinion. There will be more arrests in the coming days. We learn that the suspects tried to make house of Rahul Rai a disputed property while filing certain civil cases in local courts,” said a police officer privy to the police investigation.

In his complaint to police, Rahul Rai also accuses one of the uncles and others for trying to grab his properties in the connivance of Shalinder Rai, a resident of Sector 45. He reported to police that in June this year, he learnt that his two houses in Sector 42 were put on sale and when he along with his maternal uncle came to see his house, Shalinder Rai and others threatened him with dire consequences.
