Jofra Archer will be the player to watch out for once the Ashes series kicks off in mid-June this year. Archer, who missed almost two years of cricket due to injury, made a comeback against South Africa earlier this year. The 28-year-old bowler then headed to the IPL and made his Mumbai Indians’ debut against Royal Challengers Bangalore where he picked up a niggle in his elbow.
The injury kept him out for the next four matches before returning in the clash against Punjab Kings, but his exclusion from MI’s recent fixture against Gujarat Titans has attracted many rumours regarding his injury.
Archer’s England teammate Mark Wood came out in his support and is very much optimistic on his return to the Test side. Wood himself has seen tough times when he was out of the team for a while due to injury.
“I feel for Jofra actually and I can sympathize with him quite a bit there. You feel like you’re champion player and I’m sure he’ll comeback and be a champion again,” Sky Sports quoted Wood as saying.
Wood also believes that Archer will be both physically and mentally fit for the Ashes series.
“He has overcome bigger things and I’m sure that he will be ready for the Ashes. He’ll get great treatment there in Mumbai and England will look after him so that, come the Ashes, he will be mentally and physically ready,” he added.
Meanwhile, Archer unwillingly became a part of an unnecessary headline when he publically lashed out at a reporter through his social media account.
It was reported that Archer had travelled to Belgium for his elbow surgery which the fast bowler completely denied on his Twitter account. He also angrily accused the reporter of putting up a false story and facts without his consent.
“Putting out an article without knowing the facts & without my consent is crazy. Whoever the reporter is shame on you, an already worrying and troubling time for a player and you exploit it for your personal gain, it’s people like you that are the problem,” Archer had tweeted.
Archer still continues to be a part of the Mumbai Indians squad for the remainder of the season.
The five-time champions currently sits at the eighth position in the points table with six points and they will be facing Rajasthan Royals in their next match at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, April 30.
